Ulcerative colitis is a chronic disease of the colon, or large intestine. The disease is marked by inflammation and ulceration of the colon mucosa, or innermost lining. Tiny open sores, or ulcers, form on the surface of the lining, where they bleed and produce pus and mucus. Because the inflammation makes the colon empty frequently, symptoms typically include diarrhea (sometimes bloody) and abdominal pain. It is estimated that as many as one million Americans have Inflammation Bowel Disease. In Chinese Medicine, Colitis is caused by liver tension (stress), which affects the functions of spleen and colon. It also associates with damp heat in the large intestine caused by improper diet. Sometimes long- term colitis is due to weakness of stomach and spleen’s functions. Treatments includes acupuncture and herbal supplements.
