ADHD

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV-TR, ADHD is a developmental disorder that arises in childhood, in most cases before the age of 7 years, is characterized by developmentally inappropriate levels of inattention and/or hyperactive-impulsive behavior, and results in impairment in one or more major life activities, such as family, peer, educational, occupational, social, or adaptive functioning. There are three subtypes of ADHD: Predominantly Inattentive, Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive, and Combined Type.

In children the disorder is characterized by inattentiveness, impulsive behavior, and restlessness.

ADHD is broadly defined and pervasive, and it is likely that the symptoms attributed to ADHD have a variety of different causes. The initial triggers could include genetic vulnerabilities, allergies, viral or bacterial infections, brain injury, or nutritional deficits. As a result, this disorder occasionally responds to a five day fast (see mainstream treatment section). A 1990 study at the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health correlated ADHD with a series of metabolic abnormalities in the brain, providing further evidence that ADHD is a neurological disorder.

In Chinese Medicine, ADHD is caused by excessive Liver Heat, which leads to Hyper activity, Anxiety, Anger, Insomnia. Another cause is spleen Deficiency, which leads to indigestion and poor absorption of nutrients, which cause mucus accumulation, sluggishness, bacteria imbalance, reflex, constipation, and obesity.

Treatment includes acupuncture and herbal supplements.
