Psoriasis is a skin condition producing red scaling elevated plaques commonly on the elbows and knees. It may be more extensive or even universal (psoriatic erythroderma). The fingernails and toenails are often affected (psoriatic nail dystrophy). It is non-contagious, aggravated by stress (physical or emotional), may produce depression and loss of self-esteem, affects all ages, The most common psoriasis is also known as Classic Psoriasis or Psoriasis Vulgaris. It is affecting about 80-90% of people with the disease. People with plaque psoriasis have raised, red, inflamed areas of skincalled plaquesoften on the scalp, knees, elbows, chest, or back. Mainly upper torso and can sometimes acur around the forhead. These inflamed plaques of skin are covered by a silvery-white buildup called scale.
Psoriasis is driven by the immune system, especially involving a type of white blood cell called a T cell. Normally, T cells help protect the body against infection and disease. T cells help create scabs over wounds. In the case of psoriasis, T cells are put into action by mistake and become so active that they trigger other immune responses, which lead to inflammation and to rapid turnover of skin cells. Epidermal cells then build up on the surface of the skin, forming itchy patches or plaques.
In Chinese medicine, Psoriasis is caused by poor diet and liver tension, which throws the digestion out of balance. The body cant get rid of toxin and start accumulating damp heat. Treatment includes acupuncture and herbal supplements
